I was taking a martial arts class at Basalt Middle School one March evening when I collapsed and hit the back of my head on the floor. I was told I was unconscious, not breathing and turned blue. I had suffered cardiac arrest. By standers jumped to action and can be credited with saving my life. A citizen began continuous chest compression CPR, while another by stander ran to the school office to retrieve the school’s Automated External Defibrillator (AED). With the help of a police officer that arrived on the scene the AED was used to shock my heart into a more normal rhythm. I am alive and well today because of the action by standers took before the ambulance arrived.
